The Sacred Thread of Yoga: October 11 to 17, 2010

Dear Student of Yoga,

We are very happy to inform you that the "Sacred Thread of Yoga" Festival will be held in Fort Mason, San Francisco, California. Now a National Historic Landmark and a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Fort Mason houses a diverse collection of non-profit organizations focussed on the environment, the arts and culture. Located in the Marina District, it has been converted into a collection of parks and gardens which blend with late nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings devoted to serving the community. Placed right upon the ocean, and on the San Francisco Bay, Fort Mason used to guard San Francisco harbour. It was the disembarkation point for US troops throughout the Pacific Theater. An enviable location within sight of Golden Gate Bridge, we will also enjoy stunning views across the Bay and over to the famous Alcatraz Island, now a tourist resort. The Festival will have its headquarters in Lower Fort Mason, and in the Firehouse and the Herbst and Festival Pavilions (the piers from which troops used to disembark).

When 9/11 happened, over in New York City, the displaced businesses and the emergency support staff suddenly needed extensive but temporary accommodations. Tenting and marquee companies stepped in to fill that need, one of them being Tentnology which won a series of awards for the tents it erected. The Sacred Thread of Yoga Festival will erect an entire 'Kashmiri' or 'Rajasthani' style tented city/community within the Herbst and Festival Pavilions, and also on the surrounding grounds at Fort Mason. The yoga classes, meditation sessions and talks will therefore take place right beside the Pacific Ocean in a range of tents espeially constructed for the purpose, and which will evoke the sacred atmosphere conducive to the Festival's mission.

The Sacred Thread of Yoga team would also like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of Coran Capshaw and his Red Light Management team. Coran first cut his teeth in the music business working and touring with The Grateful Dead, then moving on to become the manager of such well-known artists as Phish, the Dave Matthews Band, Fantasia Barrino, Say Anything, and a host of others. Red Light Management regularly host the Outside Lands, Mile High and Bonnaroo Festivals amongst others.

Inititally conceived of by Kofi Busia, who was also responsible for the Yogacharya Festival of 2007 (held to celebrate B. K. S. Iyengar's 70th year as a yoga teacher), the Sacred Thread Of Yoga Festival, October 2010, is a festival of gratitude to the ancient teachers who transmitted the sacred thread of knowledge across the generations—from teacher to student—to reach us all today. The Festival will draw together students and master teachers to honor and to celebrate this passing on of the connective fiber of time and sacredness which is the blessing and inspiration of yoga, of Spirit, and of meditation.

We look forward to seeing you in 2010 and wish you blessings and peace.
