Friday, October, 15th: 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Class Description:

The steady flow of the salutations often makes it difficult to fully guide the elements of each asana and transition, often leading to confusion, frustration, even injury. Yet Sun Salutations are at the heart of most Hatha yoga practices, especially in flow-oriented classes. Here we set the rhythm and mood for all that follows, warming the entire body as we connect breath and movement in the gradual opening to deeper practice. Yet as simple as they are, the Sun Salutaitons are also fairly complex when we look at them closely.

In this workshop, we will look closely at teaching and practicing Classical Surya Namaskara and the A/B forms found in the Krishnamacharya tradition, exploring basic principles of alignment, modifications, verbal and hands-on cues, breath, movement, bandhas and dristi within and between each of twelve basic asanas. We will give close consideration to the functional anatomy and bio-mechanics of each asana and transitional movement. The workshop is designed for teachers interested in deepening their understanding of how to teach safe, expansive, spirited Sun Salutations in Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga Vinyasa and other flow-oriented classes; new and experienced students can take this workshop to take their practice to a deeper and more sustainable level.
