Class Description:

Pranayama is the essential medium of bodymind wholeness and spiritual awakening that most clearly differentiates yoga from other forms of physical and metaphysical practice. Yet is tends to be mystified, leading many teachers to diminish its importance in regular yoga classes and students to miss out on the most powerfully transformative techniques in Hatha yoga.

This workshop is about refining conscious breathing. We will start with natural breathing, then explore the pranayama concepts of vritti (sama and vishama), kumbhaka (antara and bahya), and viloma as breath control and expansion tools. We look at how to introduce and refine ujjayi pranayama as an essential part of asana practice, kapalabhati as a technique for cultivating prana, and nadi shodhana for energetic balance. While the focus is on teaching pranayama, serious yoga students will find this workshop helpful in their practice.

Pregnancy and certain other conditions will contra-indicate some of the practices and lead to modifying others. An empty stomach is essential.
