The Sacred Thread of Yoga

Type of Class: [E] The Sacred Thread of Yoga

Some notes to help you select your classes

The Sacred Thread (or yajnopavita) traditionally worn around the neck and shoulder by brahmins represents "Guru Parampara", the "lineage of the Guru Order". The tradition of wearing it dates back 5,000 years and more, to the time of the Vedas. It is generally made of hand-spun cotton. When worn In the stavya position it runs across the chest and rests on the left shoulder. When first put on it is traditionally made of three threads knotted together symbolizing a variety of triads. Amongst these are: the trimurtis or three great Hindu deities of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva; the three conditions of Sat, Chit and Ananda or Being Consciousness and Bliss; the creation, preservation and destruction of the universe; the three qualities of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas; the three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep and the like; and the observation by the wearer of the triple control over mind, speech and body, or of thought, word and deed. Guru-sisya parampara (sisya means student) has been preserved over the ages because one generation is always able to inspire the next to preserve a lineage going back to Creation. As such, yoga can also only be preserved through the continuation of this inspiration. All the Presenters at this Festival have been inspired to take up and continue yoga by someone whom they have willingly, and often with great personal sacrifice, traveled thousands of miles to see. And just as they preserved Guru Parampara by yearning to be "near to" those who previously inspired them, so do they now continue that tradition by similarly being an inspiration to others. Come and enjoy the presence of these Presenters who are foremost amongst those who continue to transmit the inspiration of yoga on through the ages as they share the lives, stories and experiences involving some of the most remarkable people of our time. (Sessions generally 1-½ hrs. long).

These classes are marked in the online and printed schedules with a silver circle
